Alexandre Ouzounoff, bassoon,
Jean Schwarz, electronic treatments
French bassoonist Alexandre Ouzounoff has build a solid
reputation as one of the foremost performers of the music of
the Avant Garde. Beginning with his previous album,
Palissander's Night, Ouzounoff has moved more and more toward
improvisation and away from the printed score. Here he adds a
fascinating new twist in his collaboration with jean Schwarz
for the first time. In . . Assolutamente! the two artists
combine their talents to create three fascinating compositions
consisting of pure bassoon sounds, pure electronic sounds, and
then combinations of processed sounds from each source,
manipulated separately or simultaneously through such
electronic devices as the harmonizer, delay, or phaser. The
result is a marvelously colorful display of sonorities which
carry both musical vehicles beyond their natural limitations
into new realms of musical expression. The use of the
harmonizer is particularly effective, enabling the single
instrument to take on the dimensions of a bassoon choir at
times, as it does toward the end of the final of the three
works, "L'ours et le rat."
