Sampler soloist whiz Michel Pascal has discovered a wonderful
sonic place in the digital realm where instrumental
performance and electronic sounds come together as musical DNA
to create a new lifeform. Pascal creates sound portraits that
draw upon recordings of instrumental soloists. And together
they form an imaginary orchestra that plays works of immense
beauty and grace. Pascal's sense of rhythm and sound is
extraordinary.
The performances are by Michel Pascal (composer, sound
processing, sampler), and musicians of the imaginary
orchestra: Pierre Yves Artaud (flutes), Jean Querlier (oboe),
Michel Lethiec (clarinet), Alexandre Ouzounoff (bassoon),
Daniel Kientzy (saxophone), Patrice Petitdidier (horn),
Bernard Vitet (trumpet), Vinko Globokar (trombone), Michel
Godard (tuba), Pablo Cueco (zarb), Gerard Fremy (piano),
Elisabeth Chojnacka (harpsichord), Brigitte Sylvestre (harp),
Raymond Boni (guitar), Charles Frey (violin), Michel
Michalakakos (viola), Jean Grout (cello), and Barre Philips
(double bass).
"An extension of the 'virtual orchestra' in which composer
Pascal composes music out of gathered individual instrumental
tones and lines (with the musicians never having met or
convened in one space at the same time, natch). Participants
include Vinko Globokar (trombone), Raymond Boni (Guitar),
Barre Philips (Bass), Michel Godard (Tuba), Daniel Kientzy
(Saxphone), Pierre Yves Artaud (Flute), etc... Similar in
application to John Oswald's plunderphonic construction of the
free jazz quartet out of Steve Lacy and Cecil Taylor (etc...)
