:: What is it that makes black metal so fascinating? For me it ::
:: has always been the combination of the music itself and the ::
:: mystical atmosphere surrounding it. The best works are ::
:: those that take you on a trip to dark and hidden places and ::
:: tell ancient tales of folkloristic horrors and mournful ::
:: souls. One artist who has always had a fantastic feeling of ::
:: creating that kind of special atmosphere surely is the ::
:: German mastermind Taaken, who has been active in the scene ::
:: for more than two decades. While having been part of ::
:: various outfits his main imprint is quite probably Odal, a ::
:: name that should be known to each fan of the genre ::
:: worldwide. With each of the previous four full lengths as ::
:: well as the output released on splits and EPs he has ::
:: created something unique and special, so it should not come ::
:: as surprise that with his fifth album ôWelten Mutterö he ::
:: has trumped his own work once again. ::
:: ::
:: It surely does not came as surprise that Taaken has once ::
:: again forged some solid riffs. The well-known basics are ::
:: all there, and this man produces all the genreÆs trademark ::
:: ingredients with safe hand. Fierce tremolo runs, flickering ::
:: lead melodies, blast-beats battering your skull, grim and ::
:: icy vocals û everything is in place. The opening track ôàum ::
:: Ewiges zu Schaffenö has been released as appetizer, and it ::
:: carries all the attributes of a great black metal record. ::
:: However, Odal do not stop there and give us something ::
:: surpassing most other stuff. This album proves to be a ::
:: ferocious yet measured delivery that captures the excellent ::
:: qualities of black metal in a way only few others are able ::
:: to replicate. Riffs combine organically with the frantic ::
:: drumming and the songwriting keeps reaching new heights ::
:: with each following track. ::
:: ::
:: It is the ability to strike with the type of scorching ::
:: intensity and speed that can make German black metal such a ::
:: great listen. It may not fall far from the established ::
:: genre sound, but this record is able to provide the type of ::
:: majestic, commanding leads and violent riffing that ::
:: continues to be incredibly appealing. ThereÆs that perfect ::
:: balance of jagged aggression and sweeping melodies, and as ::
:: you get towards the second half the songs begin to showcase ::
:: some of their coldest and entrancing melodic leads. ::
:: TaakenÆs biggest strength as songwriter is the seemingly ::
:: effortless combination of heaviness and ambience, evident ::
:: nearly everywhere on the album. He keeps blending ::
:: blistering fury with dismally dark passages in a gorgeously ::
:: and seamlessly smooth fashion. ::
:: ::
:: Taaken is accompanied only by his wife on this fascinating ::
:: journey. A.D.D. is not only responsible for the bass parts, ::
:: but also provides some keyboard lines and a few violin ::
:: notes, lending the music additional layers. Her playing ::
:: feels like the final piece of the puzzle, to round off a ::
:: piece of music which is chock-full of outstanding moments ::
:: and brilliant harmonies. There is endless melody within the ::
:: catchy guitar work that will grip any black metal fan who ::
:: enjoys some piercing assaults, but is also on the look for ::
:: something to create deeper feelings while listening. The ::
:: monolithic momentum of the record rises and falls so ::
:: brilliantly and smoothly, and the album just flies by ::
:: without noticing. There is not one moment which feels dull ::
:: or unnecessary, and the flow of it is more or less perfect, ::
:: something that is also underlined by the fitting production ::
:: job. The sound is clear and dynamic, but not lifeless and ::
:: over-compressed. ::
:: ::
:: Brooding, dark and melancholic, Odal have delivered a ::
:: magnificently emotive and equally fierce new album. ôWelten ::
:: Mutterö rises above the sea of mediocrity and shows a lot ::
:: of other outfits how black metal is done the right way. One ::
:: aspect I also always love about their work is how the ::
:: lyrics and song titles add to the special atmosphere of the ::
:: whole package, being epic but not cheesy in any way. Add to ::
:: that once again a stunning cover artwork, this time kept ::
:: within a grey and dark-blue color palette. 2021 shapes to ::
:: become a very strong year when it comes to black metal, but ::
:: this one is an absolute must-have. ::
