Release Notes:

On hiatus from Deerhoof's busy touring schedule, Chris could not restrain
himself from writing and recording the 13 songs on The Curtains' CALAMITY.
Making a record in the wrong way (with no band and no label) at the wrong time
(when juggling bands would have been impossible) was truly an uncalculated and
quixotic move. But calamities are caused by the sudden release of latent energy
when opposing forces collide, and that's exactly where the name of The Curtains'
4th album comes from. For Chris the album was pretty much inevitable.

How does it sound? The cryptic musical logic of CALAMITY might be recognizable
from Cohen's past projects (both Deerhoof and Natural Dreamers), but this record
is brimming over with what was only hinted at before. The singing and lyrics
have at last brought The Curtains' vision into a clear and recognizable focus.
The enigmatic mood and seemingly unfounded optimism of The Curtains' music have
never been so sharply contrasted, and the sounds and playing (CALAMITY is
self-produced and almost entirely performed by Chris) have never been so
uncompromisingly personal and eccentric. Casually veering from melodic pop
ballads ("Go Lucky" and "Old Scott Rd.") to unclassifiable stylistic mish-mashes
("Invisible String" and "Calamity") to unabashed bubble-gum and garage punk
("Green Water" and "Fell On a Rock") to mysterious and brooding art-song
("Roscomare"), CALAMITY continues The Curtains' project of poker-faced genre
disobedience. But this time Chris's singing and newly discovered interest in
song form has pushed to The Curtains' music to a new level of immediacy - on
CALAMITY The Curtains have become what they've always hinted that they really
were and in fact, it's almost a whole new band.

On CALAMITY, Chris is joined by several guests in the studio and their
contributions to the record are undeniable: Nedelle Torrisi has recently joined
The Curtains as a full-time performing member on guitar and vocals and her
harmonies grace many of CALAMITY's cuts. You'll hear that her and Chris's close
harmonies seemed locked as one instrument, and live they're joined by the
additional harmonies of keyboardist Annie Lewandowski. Asthmatic Kitty labelmate
Half-Handed Cloud aka John Ringhofer (also of Sufjan Stevens' Illinoisemakers
and Brother Danielson's 9 Fruit Tree) was also willing to contribute his
services on the trombone and John's regal horn really pops right out on songs
like "Spinning Top" and "The 1,000th Face." Long-time Curtains' friend and album
cover-artist Yasi Perera grabbed a mic too and belted it out with Chris on the
cosmic crisis chanting of "Invisible String." On tour, The Curtains are also
joined by Corey Fogel (formerly of the Mae-Shi) on drums.
