When it was hauled to the surface the Western Flyer looked like a ghost ship.
Veils of seaweed hung from its rotting timbers, and it was encrusted with
barnacles. The wreck was valued at $0, but a purchaser paid $1 million for it,
or more precisely, for its mystique.

De schipper van de Warnow was een lasser en een muzikant. Na de nodige
werkzaamheden aan een oude loodsboot kwam de veronderstelling over een
zeewaardig schip te beschikken. Het noorderlicht werd als reisbestemming
gekozen en na een bijna schipbreuk, aan Schotse rotskust in zwaar weer, ging
een deel van de bemanning van boord.

Ader had set sail from Chatham, Massachusetts, 10 months earlier. The artist
conceived of his journey, which was estimated to take anywhere between two to
three months, as part of an artwork titled ‘In Search of the Miraculous.’ Had
he succeeded, the Ocean Wave would have been the smallest boat to cross the
Atlantic.

‘Ik ben begonnen met een speld plat op het water te leggen. Als je dat heel
voorzichtig doet, blijft hij drijven. Op de lange duur nam ik steeds zwaardere
voorwerpen’. Af en toe hield de man de banden voorzichtig een beetje tegen het
wateroppervlak aan, en op een gegeven moment sprong hij met een onverwachte
beweging vanaf de touwladder op de razende brommer, die met een noodgang
wegspoot. Het werd al enigszins licht. De brommer was binnen een kwartier over
de horizon verdwenen.

He saw a silent black squall which had eaten up already one-third of the sky.
You know how these squalls come up there about that time of the year. First
you see a darkening of the horizon—no more; then a cloud rises opaque like a
wall. A straight edge of vapour lined with sickly whitish gleams flies up from
the southwest, swallowing the stars in whole constellations; its shadow flies
over the waters, and confounds sea and sky into one abyss of obscurity. And
all is still.
