They call the fountain Baby Fountain, the pine they have
re-baptized Father Pine. In Pavullo, like in the rest of the
Tuscan-Emilian Appenines, nothing is what it seems. And they
don't rinse their clothes in the Arno but in the imagination
and the collective memory: they elect you as a personality as
soon as you breathe. And they don't whisper your story they
tell it. Or maybe they sing it. Like i Viulαn. Lele Chiodi,
Carlo Pagliai and Laura Bernardoni were born as story-tellers
and story-tellers they remain, even now when their voices run
along a carpet of notes, the carpet that Giorgio Albiani and
Silvio Trota spread underneath them at each of their concerts.
Classical and popular music cross dialect, play with the
stories and the anecdotes of the people that come down from
the mountains and are intercepted by i Viulan a moment before
they are lost forever. They collect them, sometimes from the
cracked voices of the older people; they reproduce the style,
the nuances, even the tics: and they launch them in their
concerts. They don't bury these talents underground or in
museums: they plant them around the world. The multicoloured
world of the Appenines, where nothing is as it seems. Much
more, in fact.
Up until Samarcanda, the first Italians to appear on the
podium of the Festival Sharq Taronalari, the biggest stage of
Central Asia, meeting place for musical groups that converge
here from Europe to the Far East.
Different stories, of course, different climates, but the same
fever: the fever of the tale. it is the tale in music that
this disc collects, just like those talents. And seminates
everywhere. Even where the fountain isn't Baby Fountain and
the pine would never, ever want to change into Father Pine
Alpi
The passionate research conducted by Lele Chiodi, founder of
ôViulαnö, has continued tirelessly for the last thirty years.
The love for his land, its colours, its values, its dialects,
its music has been the driving force for this enthusiasm.
Month after month new songs are brought back to the people of
today, after being recorded sung by the voices of old people
who still remember them, and there is the feeling of saving
something special of ourselves, of our cultural tradition. In
that rural society where survival was so difficult, simplicity
and depth were inseparable elements of life, which helped
people to live more closely together through physical
suffering : frost, fear and hunger. The songs from this
collection, still convey this depth and it is hoped that they
may help us to rediscover it in our daily lives.
Viulαnö are the only advocates of this particular music and
have partecipated at many International Festivals through the
years touring France, Holland and Switzerland, and appearing
recently at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Scotland), Folk-Est
(Italy), Suoni delle Dolomiti (Italy), alongside bands such as
Jethro Tull, John Renbourn, Fairport Convention and the Kronos
Quartet. In 1998 they were awarded ôPremio Quartetto Cetraö
with ôNuova Compagnia di Canto Popolareö.
