When forced to think of Shropshire my resounding memory was
a weekend youth hostelling trip organised by my school that
resulted in one of the party losing an eye in a freak kite
incident. I kid you not...
However, attempting to expunge that image is the Shropshire
based duo of Tom Kennedy and Benet Walsh - here united
under their shared moniker The Collectors.
Following on from a rather appealing hook-up with Plaid a
few months back (for whom Bennet co-wrote the likes of
'Eyen' and 'Ralome'), 'Galapogos' marks their debut LP as a
duo - a record that combines the melancholic side of early
Air with a vial of more refined electronica (think Bola),
that comes together in an energetic fusion.
Very much enamored by the inclusion of strings, The
Collectors liberally stir violins and cellos into the mix
at the drop of the hat - kicking off with 'Black Sand' and
its taut violins that slowly open out into a vista of
Plaid-esque beats.
From here, 'Pilots' takes a flight that avoids the overt
electronics in favour of some shuffling instrumentation
(think a calm Deadly Avenger), 'Phoenix' rises with some
edgy atmospherics, whilst 'Blink' merges acoustic guitar
and digital bounce for a very pleasing result.
Closing on the swooping synths of 'Maranatha', The
Collectors have crafted an album that is parochial without
any of the negative connotations. Buy!
