Richly composed and performed, Boyhood serves as more than a glowing example of
a debut album ù Paper Airplanes has arrived with a clear and wise musical vision
intact to deliver a flawless and mature pop record. A grand creation worthy of
the latter day Beatles, the record's most impressive feat is its compositions,
each one carrying the listener on an imaginative and inspiring journey ù opener
"The Fences" begins intimately, quietly, then eventually swells to almost
pastoral grandeur before resolving into something akin to a very wise Top 40
hit; "Appalachia," with its enchanting banjo figure and fascinating vocal melody
casts a spell over the listener like the best of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen
Sondheim. There's also time and attention given to attitudinal rock, such as
during "Coronation Day," where loud, rock-intensive guitars slash their way
through the speakers above Anthony Piazza's John Paul Jones-esque bass and
Nathan Wilder's solid, soldiering drumming, or the disquieting opening moments
of "Julius," which imagines a less pretentious ù albeit acid-laced ù Yes. But
none of the tracks here are so straight-forward as to evoke only a single mood ù
"PDA" opens with Marcus Stoesz's meditative piano figure, before evolving into a
fine and complex pop song; "True Men Like You," quickly builds into the sound of
a raging emotional storm after a relatively sedate opening ù and that complexity
is perhaps this record's greatest attribute and the Paper Airplanes' greatest
gift.
