Girltronica... does it exist?
We have Colleen, Midaircondo, Spunk and of course Bjork
having their wicked way over electrical experimentations
but is this a genre all of it's own? Is electronica
becoming ...gulp... less masculine?
Well I hope so, the musty bedroom smell of boytronica has
become a bit tired and dated of late, it's time to throw a
spanner (or a knitting needle?) in the works.
Doddodo aka Namin Haku is the latest in the line of
mischievous female electronic activists to drop into the
scene, and she certainly knows how to make a noise about
it.
The rather shockingly titled 'Sample Bitch Story' is a
schizophrenic mess of samples, found sounds and drug
induced insanity held together with ten year old duct tape
and animal hair. Slowed down hiphop beats are paired with
medieval English folk music, random J-Pop samples, carnival
sounds and gabbacore beats are layed over middle-eastern
classics and farmyard noises.
I know what this might sound like, and trust me, it's every
bit as wrong as that and then some. However, it's also
quite endearing, I don't know if it's the female touch but
there's nothing aggressive and macho about this record, the
blends are fun, different and very appealing.
When you hear those barn dances twist and turn their ways
into rave you won't be disgusted - you'll be enthralled.
Go girl.
