Release Notes:
The german project Guther's new album is another
one of those cds that I have been waiting and
waiting for. Their debut from 2003, "I know you
know", has been one of my favourites since they
released it. I still listen quite a lot to it with
pleasure. Now, their new album "Sundet" is finished
and ready for release on Morr music in september. I
have recently received a promo, and I am excited!
Just to make it clear (because I fear that my
review may not make this clear enough...):
This is a POP album, with all the catchiness and
melody you can imagine. Handclaps, flutes,
harmonicas and sweet, friendly vocals. And it is
much more than that...
The new album is more mature and more complex than
the debut, still it sounds very easy and simple.
That is the genious thing about it. You can listen
to it and enjoy it as a pop record in all its
simplicity, while doing the dishes or preparing for
a summer picnic. You can also dig deep into the
many layers and the interesting elements of
Guther's new music. Something for all situations...
Guther uses much of the same music making tricks as
their labelmates in the more electronic projects
Lali Puna and Ms John Soda, in addition to other
bands like f.i. Stereolab. The ground elements in
the music (bass, guitars, drums, keyboards) often
move in simple and repetitive phases before they
quickly change into another simple, repetitive
phase. A song if often built on lots of such small
repetitions. The impression of simplicity is full
of complex structures in Guther's music, as I hear
it. The structures, the rhythms, the build-ups, the
vocal work... everything sounds so simple and easy,
but going deeper into it, is is weaved together
with high musical skill. A song like "many frames a
moment" demonstrates this in full. The song is a
catchy pop tune, - lots of melody. Still, it is a
patchwork of many interesting elements and
structures.
Guther has moved on from the last album, and
developed their style. Finetuned and refined it.
They have added some ingredients and removed other.
Their style is still very characteristic and
recognizable. They make pop for sunny days, but I
LOVE the edges and the way they have managed to
make their fine popsongs so "two-sided".
I hoped for this, and now, when I have the product
in my hands, I could not wish for anything better.
