Release Notes:
August 21st sees the long awaited return of Olivier AlaryÆs Ensemble, with a
brand new single, æDisown, DeleteÆ, his debut release for FatCat. Featuring four
new tracks, it heralds his first new material for five years, with an LP to
follow this Autumn.
Olivier originally created Ensemble as his musical persona in 1998, as a
platform to explore the meeting point between melodic noise and experimental
pop. Initially working under the name æHearing Is Our ConcernÆ, Olivier was
actually the first person the newly-founded FatCat label ever received a demo
from. Olivier wanted to work further on his tracks and in the end, the plans
came to nothing. Subsequently the name was changed to Ensemble, and a chance
meeting with Rephlex Records in 2000 resulted in the release of his first album,
æSketch ProposalsÆ. While not widely released, æSketch ProposalsÆ gained a
small, dedicated audience, and led to a number of writing collaborations with
Bjork, along with several remixes of her work.
This collaborative spirit has continued with his latest, most fully realised
body of work to date, the self-titled æEnsembleÆ album, from which the single,
æDisown, DeleteÆ is taken. Featuring a guest performance from Chan Marshall (Cat
Power), the singleÆs title track is a delicate fusion of symphonic,
wall-of-sound production, and intimate folk-pop vocals. The 7ö also features the
sublime æCarmineÆ, with the CD single also featuring two further exclusive
tracks; the serene, expansive æTheir LinesÆ and a characteristically abstract
but beautiful reworking of æDisown, DeleteÆ by Tim Hecker.
The LP, out September 25th, also features further collaborations with the likes
of Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr), UK based Mileece, Adam Pierce (Mice
Parade) and orchestral arrangements by Johannes Malfatti, performed by the
Babelsberg Film Orchestra in Germany.
