Born in Havana and currently active in New York as a key member of Kip
Hanrahan's Deep Rhumba project, conga player Pedro Martinez looks to Africa as
not only the source of what makes him what he is, but as a kind of riff with
countless permutations. Though many African bands have paid back the compliment
of a century of Afro-Cuban music with their own Latin grooves, few Cuban artists
have integrated African elements this directly into their music. The highlife
horns and backing vocals on "Que tu Quieres" swing wider than their caliente
counterparts and the call-and-response structure of "La Bicicleta" recalls the
great township records of the 70s. Some of the programming add-ons sound
superfluous, especially since Martinez fills in every empty space with dense
percussion. Except for the Spanish language, there's little here that directly
connects to Cuba. Africa just happens to be everywhere.
