░ The eight instrumental tracks are played ░
░ with real speed and enthusiasm. The ░
░ running time of 46 minutes is manageable, ░
░ but in this time you get an extraordinary ░
░ amount of notes. It is astonishing with ░
░ the mature technical competence that all ░
░ musicians are still relatively young, one ░
░ wonders at what age the boys started at ░
░ their instruments. Guitarist Rafowitz is a ░
░ graduate of Berklee College of Music and ░
░ became known to a wider audience when he ░
░ won the Strandberg Guitarworks ░
░ Competition. ░
░ ░
░ The band has a wide range of stylistic ░
░ influences. Rudess and Petrucci of Dream ░
░ Theater are mentioned as usual suspects. A ░
░ jazz orientation is unmistakable, because ░
░ Arch Echo's idols are also greats from the ░
░ funk/fusion metier - Return To Forever, Al ░
░ di Meola and John Scofield, but ░
░ surprisingly above all Soft Machine ░
░ guitarist Allan Holdsworth. ░
░ ░
░ About the music (Mike Portnoy listens to ░
░ this before falling asleep!): The pieces ░
░ are quite similar, but built up with a ░
░ high complexity. An initially simple theme ░
░ - melody and harmony played by ░
░ piano/guitar, is introduced and the ░
░ arrangement then varied. Catchy, strongly ░
░ syncopated passages alternate with ░
░ polyphonic dialogues between guitar and ░
░ keyboard, whereby the musicians can be ░
░ attested a pleasing compositional and ░
░ musical talent. These madly doubled solos ░
░ by Rafowitz and keyboardist Joey Izzo, ░
░ sometimes separated by a third or fifth, ░
░ the jazz cadences leave the beaten track ░
░ of prog (Afterburger) and fly at you with ░
░ a lot of notes that are out of key or ░
░ within modulations - the harmonic ░
░ progressions are almost impossible to ░
░ predict. ░
░ ░
░ This is extremely exciting, but not music ░
░ to relax to; one should listen carefully, ░
░ and I can imagine that many a listener is ░
░ overwhelmed by the demands. The high ░
░ technical skill is at the expense of the ░
░ feeling and degenerates into an end in ░
░ itself, some will counter. That's true, ░
░ but as always, it's a question of point of ░
░ view. ░
░ ░
░ There is more peace and excursions into ░
░ classical piano in the concluding My ░
░ Heart Sometimes, which is almost a long ░
░ track at eight minutes long. ░

░ After this debut, one can be curious about ░
░ what else will be offered in the near ░
