░ little more work behind his drum kit, but ░
░ otherwise not much has changed since the ░
░ first part. Multi-instrumentalist and ░
░ composer Robert Reed in his Mike Oldfield ░
░ guise continues the story of the ░
░ mysterious Ringmaster. In addition to the ░
░ Ringmaster, a girl with swan feathers and ░
░ a minstrel carry out their esoteric tasks, ░
░ which probably consist mainly of ░
░ positively inspiring a composer who is ░
░ struggling with himself. ░
░ ░
░ As it is poetically described on the ░
░ cover, also with The Ringmaster: Part ░
░ Two Robert Reed takes all those ░
░ interested into a paradisiacal world in ░
░ which Minstrel thinks of Harlequin and ░
░ sings the butterflies into the world. In a ░
░ fairytale prog world, namely, where time ░
░ plays no role because art reigns there. ░
░ ░
░ Thus Reed's album offers the best features ░
░ of Oldfield's genius as a composer before ░
░ he thought he had to write hit songs. The ░
░ jubilantly orchestrated parts with a ░
░ healthy share of bombast, lilting folk ░
░ moments, exotic and fairy-like songs, ░
░ fragile, mystical and danceable themes as ░
░ well as those with a classical or retro ░
░ prog touch: in short, first-class Oldfield ░
░ prog is offered here as every fan dreams ░
░ of it. Reed incorporates a remarkable ░
░ compositional density into his rich ░
░ arrangements, so that you can't stop being ░
░ amazed, because every idea is followed by ░
░ the next one. Reed masters the sound and ░
░ style of Oldfield's guitar playing ░
░ impeccably. There is only one song apart ░
░ from all the instrumental music: the very ░
░ soulful Sendlinger's Song sung by ░
░ Angarahad Brinn. ░
░ ░
░ There are probably also ideas on ░
░ Ringmaster Part 1 + 2 that were not ░
░ directly inspired by Mike Oldfield, such ░
░ as the reggae rhythms, or traces of ░
░ classical music and film music. However, a ░
░ commentary on Ringmaster in which the ░
░ name Oldfield is not mentioned seems ░
░ inconceivable to me. However, it is not ░
░ mere copying what Reed is doing here, but ░
░ a fruitful inspiration and further ░
░ development with potential. ░
░ ░
░ The second CD contains three bonus tracks ░
░ and again a mix of the album by Tom ░
░ Newman. His mix partly shows considerable ░
░ differences to the original as far as ░
░ the composition is concerned. For example, ░
░ Newman's album begins with the wordless ░
░ vocal theme, which only appears in the ░
░ original after about 3 minutes. ░
░ ░
░ In Swan Feathered Girl (Remix), the ░
░ piece is given a partial electronic touch. ░
░ The seven-minute The Ringmaster ░
░ (Orchestral) should also be heard. The ░
░ same goes for Nairn's Jig, which reminds ░
░ me more of Incantations. ░
░ ░
░ The Ringmaster: Part Two is yet another ░
░ feast for Oldfield prog fans, which they ░
░ should not miss. ░
