TOUANE'S new Persona release, Spree Baptism, is a tribute to the town
which adopted him, and where he experienced a new way of gathering
and partying with people. A tribute to the epic beauty of dawn
breaking over the Spree, the river which flows through Berlin, where
the music never stops and the DJ doesn't want to leave the console. A
summer spent attending afterhour parties with marks of a pillow still
impressed on his face. The first track, Spree Baptism, expresses this
feeling with a slow minimal rhythm blended with powerful waves.
A slow but danceable cadence, where music breaks through and fills the
space with melody and melancholia. Fahrrad Control folows with a
faster marching cadence. Another element of Marco's life, his
bicycle, is the inspiration point for this flight across the
dancefloor: hyperbolic climaxes, psychedelic effects, and a sense of
suspense make this song work perfectly in the mix. Like a crazy bike
trip coming back from a club, trying to avoid cops catching him with
no lights and no brakes. On the flip side, you will find the second
anthem, "Ikea Dog Parking," with acid elements and dry percussion
that opens into chords and spacey atmospheres, which showcases
Marco's improving arrangements, and his way of developing and
modulating themes within the time alloted by a 12" side.
Same with Drops, the last track of this dense maxi. The melody is
constantly re-visited and reinterpreted trying to let the dramatic effect
rise and explode, so that the minimal aesthetic, even though evident,
won't be the defining state as the texture tends towards increasing
thickness, reaching a peak and then cascading slowly into the
breakdown. This music has surprises inside, taking unexpected turns
during the first listen, then confirming the imaginative richness
upon the second, and suggesting there's more to discover with every
new spin, following Persona's credo of spreading music that won't
fade after the night is over.
