aim - known to his mates as andy turner - started his musical
voyage as a dj in heady days of 1989 playing up tempo breakbeat and
hip hop, before becoming a recording artist in his own right.
signed to grand central records in the summer of 1995 he has been
responsible for some of grand central's best received releases.
like many hip hop producers his influences are wide ranging and are
plainly visible in the grooves of his eps, as is the inspiration
provided by his father terry (of the legendary terry turner jazz
quartet).
as well as possessing acute sampling ability and
digging-in-the-crates skills andy is also a drummer and songwriter.
his song writing skills - whilst not yet available on wax, are
being honed as we speak, and should surface on his debut album to
be released early next year.
like most of the producers signed to grand central records, andy
met mark rae through the legendary fat city record shop. whilst
buying records that contained drum breaks, mark asked what they
were for - the result was 'concentrate' from the 'pacific north
west ep' which was released in july '95.
since the 'pacific north west ep', andy has been responsible for
some of gc's classics. 'soul dive ep' has become a staple part of
most mancunion dj sets and is used in the warm up by house dj's all
over the country. the quirky evil knievel sampling 'original
stuntmaster' was released on the acclaimed 'central heating'
compilation and is still quoted by many as one of the favourite
records of aim's fans. his signature tune though has become 'loop
dreams' which again appeared on the central heating compilation and
is still the subject of many phone calls and licensing enquiries.
andy is grand central's dancefloor destroyer and his releases have
been lauded by both the press and dj's alike.
