to salvage a single out of jimi tenor's overwrought, uneven "out
of nowhere" lp, warp has domesticated two of its less outrΘ tracks
with serviceable dance beats. tenor associate maurice fulton, an
old hand at oddball house, adds little to the sitar-and-strings
mirrorball of "spell" but a steady 4/4 rhythm. that's all the song
needs to become a philly-soul delight. the orchestral sketch
"backbone of night" has less of a funk foundation, but tenor
himself sculpts the track into a brief, though serviceable
stomper. hearing these songs shoehorned into a house formula,
however skillfully, makes the original album seem less meandering
and more enjoyably loopy. if the alternative is endless disco
beats, maybe the world needs more mad-scientist tinkering.

"this seems to be the most commercial track of them all. i was
happy to notice that not all i do is uncommercial. mike kearsey
did a very good job with the arrangement. i think everybody was
quite happy while making this song. i was at least... i wanted to
have tubular bells in it. and i got them!" -jimi tenor
