sawhney, a hindu whose parents were born in india but emigrated to
england, has an ear for the way voices interact. like tricky,
another genre-hopping child of immigrants, he collaborates with
talented singers and rappers and lets their varied voices weave a
polyglot subtext. from sanchita farruque's delicate crooning on
"broken skin" to swati natekar's breakbeat-backed ululations on
"nadia," from spek's q-tip-style flow on "the pilgrim" to devinder
vikyat singh's serene singing on the hymn-like "anthem without a
nation," "beyond skin" is all about citizens of the world speaking
in their native tongues.
"immigrant" is the second single taken from the album "beyond
skin". it features jayante bose on vocals, in a beautiful piano-led
r'n'b track. the remixes come from the german trⁿby trio who once
again deliver a piece of syncopated funk as we like it (remember
their groovy remix for peace orchestra?). then it's time for the
west-london kv5 crew to create a 2step tune that will get your head
