│ Though Portishead have only two albums' worth of material, if there │
│ was ever a band needing a live album, it is them. The sound and │
│ substance of their compositions are utterly spellbinding, and live, │
│ they equal, if not sometimes surpass, their studio-crafted │
│ counterparts. Most of this album is drawn from a special show in New │
│ York in July 1997 which featured a 30-piece string section and 5-horn │
│ accompaniment. (Amazingly, this recording is better than the actual │
│ event.) Articulating sampled melodies and breaks, the bigger band │
│ sires a beautifully fleshed-out sound, as on first- album favorites │
│ like "Mysterons" and "Glory Box." Vocalist Beth Gibbons is compelling │
│ throughout, especially on a tremendous version of "Sour Times," │
│ reinterpreted in aggressive rock fashion that leaves her wailing │
│ majestically like a reborn Joan Baez. Songs from the group's second │
│ album unfortunately don't get such a treatment, but as should be │
│ expected, this is positively haunting. │
