│ It's probably best not to mention that Ruby's Lesley Rankine was the │
│ shrieking lunatic writhing on the floor amidst the guitar onslaught │
│ of Silverfish; Ruby sounds completely - 180 degrees - different. But │
│ having witnessed the charisma of Rankine's live fury, we'd be curious │
│ to see what she was up to even if it were playing accordion in a │
│ polka band. Salt Peter is a marvelous pop album in a trip-hop setting │
│ (think Tricky/Bjork/etc.); yeah, it's the sound of the moment and by │
│ next week everyone will be doing it - but they won't be doing it this │
│ well. Rankine surprises not only with stick-in-your-head hooks and │
│ melodies but also with a compelling voice, one filled with presence │
│ and personality. Her tense lyrics are redolent of sex and bitterness, │
│ but she conveys as much with phrasing and tone as with words. Her │
│ breathy inhalation or a single wordless growl between lines ("Heidi") │
│ can be chilling; her expressive crooning on the campy lounge vamp │
│ "Bud" is both enchanting and hilarious. But Rankine is only half the │
│ story: Mark Walk (the two met in the Pigface revolving door) cleverly │
│ constructs multi-dimensional dance, rock, mutant-jazz and │
│ post-industrial soundscapes with razor-sharp, kitchen-sink, │
│ anything-goes sampling. Expect the unexpected. │
