it is an act and a record label. remember that, it could be
important one day.
it is based in blackpool, the mecca of the north and the las vegas
of the british riviera.
where the sun always shines.
the three met through a mutual appreciation of dance music, dick
and ben over the counter of manchester's underground records while
dick had known mark from his reputation as blackpool's studio
maverick. they all got together in marks' studio along with
m-people keyboardist paul birchall and emerged with wildride, a
wild-pitch influenced house track which was snapped up by rob's
records and they realised that the studio bound smoking
competition should be repeated.
paper recording's fifth release, bust-a-bubble/nokturnal was
followed by bessie (later to come out on warner brothers) and
shaboom emerged out of blackpool's polluted sea front. shaboom
records was born soon after as an outlet for their material and
some of the gems hidden in mark's back catalogue that he recorded
with us types like marshall jefferson and doc martin. the label
caused waves from the start and has covered all bases from the
smooth jazz workouts of the jazz twit and gypsy to mark and doc's
dark blakdoktor alter-ego to watkin's hard edged filter disko and
the deep grooves of the special agents, del 5 and the wamdue kidz.
in 1999 interest in shaboom grew and warners brothers approached
the act to do an album. taka boom was enlisted as their permanent
vocalist and what emerged was meccafunk, an album that brought
blackpool's northern soul legacy up to date with it's storming
vocal tracks alongside the deepest house and 90s funk. the first
taster single was bessie and woman cry, which was reworked by dj
sneak and doc martin but it wasn't until sweet sensation was
released that shaboom took off. it was single of the week on two
thirds of radio 1's daytime shows with pete tong claiming to have
nearly crashed his car when he heard it on danny rampling. it was
also single of the week in muzik and mixmag and reached number one
in dj's coveted hype chart, eventually scraping the national top
40. a completely reworked and live salsoul style totally followed
which had ashley beedle 'going back to the drawing board' and dj
harvey wearing out his acetate.
the year 2000 saw shaboom signed to atlantic in the usa where
david morales has remixed totally at his own personal request and
meccafunk pencilled in for a summer release plus if you need me to
be released in the uk
shab 050 is due out at the end of next month which is a taka boom
fronted remake from the warner brothers album 3 three years ago
called if you need me which sounds like a salsoul lost gem. it
features the mfsb string section, andy gangadeen (massive attack)
and various other philadelphia luminaries. it's been played off
acetate by onionz, king britt and doc martin.
