:::: Additional info
:::: ROSEWOOD was the 1977 major label debut of trumpeter (and
:::: flugelhornist/cornettist/composer) Woody Shaw, whose extensive and
:::: much-lauded work as a sideman with such giants as Eric Dolphy,
:::: Bud Powell, Horace Silver, Max Roach, Jackie McLean, Art Blakey,
:::: McCoy Tyner, Dexter Gordon evinced his myriad gifts as both an
:::: "inside" and "outside" improviser. With his resplendent tone,
:::: thorough knowledge of jazz and classical music, abiding sense of
:::: lyricism in any setting, and mastery of the wide intervals that
:::: made his solos adventuresome and instantly recognizable,
:::: Shaw (1944-1989) seemed poised to become the next major figure
:::: on his principal instrument. Alas, it was not to be, owing to a
:::: serious malady and personal problems that contributed to his
:::: early death.
::::
:::: This expanded, remixed, remastered edition of ROSEWOOD now
:::: includes three selections from FOR SURE! (1979-1980) and new
:::: liner notes by producer Michael Cuscuna, a close friend of the
:::: trumpeter. Shaw leads eight different ensembles, ranging in size
:::: from quintet to 15-piece orchestra, in a program of originals,
:::: some his and some by key sidemen. The accent is on refulgent
:::: Latin rhyhms, particularly sambas, and fully developed arrangements
:::: that yield pungent statements by tenor saxophone giant Joe Henderson,
:::: tenor and soprano sacophonist Carter Jefferson, pianists
:::: Onaje Allan Gumbs and Larry Willis, and, of course, the leader.
