irma records starts in bologna, italy in 1988, when the few
independent labels of the time were dealing with rock music, the
artistic director umbi damiani and the general manager massimo
benini started a production team with a small circle of dance djs
and producers from the area including claudio moz-art rispoli
(future founder of jestofunk), cesare collina (aka tito valdez),
cesare cera (black mighty wax), checco montefiori of montefiori
cocktail and kekkotronics and luca trevisi (ltj x-perience). the
name irma is due to a funny story. the building where irma started
business was a former famous brothel named ôirma casadiprimordineö
(first class house) after the madame who used to run the house. so
the name was kept for the label and coupled with the image of irma
la douce a character of a famous 60's movie. quite an exceptional
phenomenon in the international discography, is irma records being
an independent label that with its sound influenced in depth the
music market.
the capacity of this label is to represent a unique and
recognizable sound, that is the combination of an innovative spirit
and a constant research of new artist to include in the labelÆs
roster. after 12 years of releases (the first records ôfirst jobö
by kekkotronics & ltj dates back in 1988) irma records is still one
of the rare examples of independent label that nowadays is
considered like a little major.
all this is the final chapter of artistic choices blending all
contaminations of the various genre of music; a true ôgroove
alchemyö that unites funk, house, hip hop, soul and jazz,
electronic, drum æn bass, lounge and many other styles with that
italian twist, made of cool sonorities and passion. probably this
aspect contributed to the consolidation outside of italy of irma
records as a quality label with a worldwide distribution, from
canada to australia, from europe to japan, and with offices in
london and new york.
