| Bearback is the twisted collaboration of Philadelphia native |
| turned Berliner Jay Haze and ZurichÆs Samim. The duo met and |
| quickly clicked in 1999 near the idyllic setting of Lake Zurich, |
| each with a successful background in electronic music production. |
| Samim consequently released several EPÆs on JayÆs Tuning Spork |
| club imprint with production partner Michal, while Jay continued |
| unrelenting and diverse output on his Contexterrior, Tuning |
| Spork, Textone and Future Dub labels. Later their friendship |
| developed into laid-back musical collaboration resulting in the |
| first Bearback release on Tuning Spork Family Affair, a sub-label |
| dedicated to Tuning Spork artist collaborations, early in 2005. |
| This single release sparked intense interest from all sides of |
| the music spectrum taking them both by surprise and moving them |
| to expand on the project. |
| |
| Under the InfluenceÆs bent development started primarily on the |
| dance floor tip with signature Bearback vocals which were central |
| in the development of their unclassifiable sound. A dance version |
| of Under the Influence was subsequently completed as a vinyl-only |
| double LP of 8 heavily motivational tracks which will be released |
| in parallel to the CD listening version described here (the two |
| versions share only 3 tracks in common). In between production of |
| the dance tracks, short 3 1/2 minute gems emerged from |
| spontaneous studio jams with impromptu lyrics which dazed Jay and |
| Samim and took them into slower and funkier dimensions. Friends |
| joined the jams and Under the Influence took on an entirely new |
| hip hop feel. |

| The album opens with the funky mover æA WarningÆ featuring |
| straight out of North Philly former street hustler turned Tuning |
| Spork mainstay LilÆ Dirrty Ghetto Bastard and guest vocalist MC |
| Big Bully hailing from East L.A. Track 1 is centered on a message |
| we could all have benefited from at some point in our lives: |
| ôDonÆt want to see you in the morning. DonÆt forget your friend.ö |
| Next up æ215 to the RightÆ is an east-west unity jam with LilÆ |
| Dirrty, Big Bully, and rising luminary from Memphis Tennessee Da |
| Euro whilst æFreaking Your MindÆ questions behavior that |
| transcends scene and culture: getting completely caught up |
| chasing something you donÆt need. Appearing with LilÆ Dirrty on |
| æFrozen,Æ a track dedicated to struggling to maintain oneÆs self |
| against external pressures, is Senior Coconut vocalist Argenis |
| Brito. æSneakingÆ continues the albumÆs intensity with an upfront |
| and sinister rap song about stepping up, later on æAll it Took |
| Was 5 ShotsÆ LilÆ Dirrty and Da Euro expand on their street life |
| story. No longer a one sided thug, LilÆ Dirrty shows his maturity |
| getting deep about relationships and what lies beneath on |
| æScratch the SurfaceÆ, then shares some of his ghetto perspective |
| on the great social divide with æEvolution of the Revolution.Æ |
| Closing with æBearback PartyÆ and æMonkey BizÆ Haze and Samim |
| show us the heart and soul of Bearback, the party, the freak and |
| the funk. |

| Bearback takes a brash step with Under the Influence into |
| intensely unique territory showing respect for the past while |
| laying down the future combining the bounce and flow from all |
| relevant genres of funk, techno, electro, and hip hop. Bridging |
| time and space these two young producers take their club |
| backgrounds and impart to us their musical love free of any |
| earthbound hang ups. |
