Piltch, Rob (Robert Philip). Guitarist, composer, b
Toronto 25 Dec 1956. He studied guitar in turn with
Eli Kassner, Tony Bradan, and Hank Monis,
composition with Gordon Delamont and Sam Dolin,
piano with Darwyn Aitken, and guitar again with
Robert Hamilton. After working in local jazz clubs
with Ted Moses and others and touring in Canada and
the USA 1979-80 with David Clayton-Thomas and
Blood, Sweat and Tears, he settled into a career in
Toronto studios, playing in rock, contemporary
jazz, fusion, and classical styles as required.
Piltch also has appeared in club or concert
engagements with Hagood Hardy, Ron Collier, Lorne
Lofsky, Hugh Marsh, Don (W.) Thompson, and others,
and has led quartets on rare occasions at George's
Jazz Room.
Piltch has made the LPs Bells (1981-2, Umbrella
GEN-1-16), a collaboration with Thompson, and Rob
Piltch (1988, Duke Street DSR-31047). The former
includes his compositions Moon Dance, Nexus, and
Chant; the latter, Prelude, Sambo, Bags in the
Lobby Blues, Thanks J.S. (after Bach), and Farewell
to Caledon (a dedication to his father). He also
appears as a soloist on recordings by Marsh, Hardy,
Blood, Sweat and Tears, Rita Coolidge, Kathryn
Moses (Music in My Heart, 1978, PM PMR-017) Ted
Moses (More Than Ever, 1978, CBC LM-459, The
Farther You Go ... The Farther You See, 1978, Music
Necessity Music MMN-1), the Partland Brothers,
Purple Changes, Stone Alliance, and others.
