six degrees is a mature response to the fallout of a bygone "acid
jazz" era. it takes the consequent pieces and rearranges them with
smooth rhodes finesse. assisted by live players and technology, de
clive lowe suggests the inclusion of the usual generic suspects
involved in these "nu-jazz" gatherings, principally drum & bass,
hip-hop and house, and with touches of brazilian authenticity also
referred to, enough reference points are made available to make
this a highly musical and accessible album. relatively vocal free
(apart from the staid "jazzmatazz" rap of "melodious funk") the
album is a vehicle for de clive lowe's rhodes fascination and
programming skills, which rather frustratingly never break sweat,
and although tracks such as the off beat "motherland" and double
bass drops of "control" create tension, the rest rather creates an
atmospheric backdrop; accessible yes, testing no.
