█ Sleeping with the Enemy: (Jerry Goldsmith) █
█ Usually, when it comes to Goldsmith suspense █
█ scores, I love the theme but find the actual █
█ suspense music to be rather dull. When I listened █
█ to Sleeping with the Enemy, I had the exact █
█ opposite reaction. The main theme, as performed at █
█ the beginning and end seems inappropriate, but the █
█ music in between is exemplary, with a touch of █
█ John Barry and Bernard Herrmann influences. █
█ █
█ The main theme is too cute for this psycho-horror █
█ genre of film. It sounds almost like a carnival █
█ tune, stepping lightly along with a flighty █
█ synthesized background. Even though there's a █
█ carnival later in the film, it still doesn't fit. █
█ Perhaps Goldsmith meant for it to be deceiving, █
█ for it could even be appropriate for the start of █
█ a children's film. The performances thereafter are █
█ very appropriate, however. This score is dominated █
█ by more strings than brass --an unusual move for █
█ Goldsmith in the early 1990's. Thus, the theme █
█ takes on a more Barry-like feeling; in parts, it █
█ sounds remarkably similar to High Road to China █
█ (without the epic proportions, of course). The █
█ theme, as appears in its dramatic form in tracks █
█ five and seven are very good --maintaining the █
█ innocent personality of Julia Roberts while never █
█ letting us forget the creepiness of her stalker. █
█ █
█ The electronics are balanced well in this score as █
█ well. The orchestrations are interesting. The pure █
█ horror tracks are almost a tribute to Herrmann's █
█ horror of the 1960's. The trademark whining, █
█ restrained trumpets are used to the full extent, █
█ with long, drawn out, fluctuating strings. █
█ Goldsmith doesn't clobber the listener with his █
█ quick bursts of brass as he did does in Malice and █
█ Basic Instinct, and therefore, the build-up of █
█ suspense is not interrupted until the very end. █
█ The resolution revisits the Barry-like theme, █
█ first in full strings, and then once again in that █
█ strange carnival type setting. █
█ █
█ Overall, this album is a very effective █
█ suspense-thriller. It is certainly more consistent █
█ than Not Without My Daughter, Goldsmith's only █
█ other score of 1991. The Van Morrison song on █
█ track three is unfortunate (I've never been a big █
█ fan of his music, and it's a bit awkward in █
█ between Goldsmith's score tracks). Although this █
█ score's theme might not function as well as that █
█ of Basic Instinct, the amount of good material on █
█ the whole is substantially greater. It's a good █
█ buy, especially if you like a suspenseful listen. █
