Behind the anonymous tag of DJ Me DJ You lie Ross Harris and Craig
Borrell - two very unusual individuals with a penchant for the
bizarre. Partners in crime in a thrift store smash-and-grab, these
two are the mad genuises responsible for the sampleadelic wonder
that is "Rainbows and Robots," the record which you now hold in
your hands. This is the duo's second record under the DJ Me DJ You
moniker; the first being a five-track EP also released on Emperor
Norton and titled "Simplemachinerock." Craig and Ross are also half
of Sukia, a experimental electronic band signed to the Dust
Brothers' Nickel Bag imprint in the US and MoWax in the UK. Sukia's
first album, "Contacto Espacial Con El Tercer Sexo" (Space Contact
with the Third Sex), was inspired by an eccentric Mexican comic
book about a lesbian vampire and her well-hung cohort, Gary
Supermacho. Confused yet? You should be. To clear things up a bit -
DJ Me DJ You's first record, "Simplemachinerock," was a
cut-and-paste romp through hip-hop breaks, Indian film scores, and
numerous other aural oddities. However, the new record is all that
and more. Simply put, it bears the mark of two individuals who have
spent far too much time digging through dusty thrift store record
bins and scouring the shelves of video stores far and wide for
B-movie gems. Aside from these arcane sample sources, Craig and
Ross collect vintage keyboards and bargain-basement synths which
were essential in creating the sound of this record. Armed with
these analog monsters and aided by live musicians playing
everything from drums to sitar, the two recorded "Rainbows and
Robots" in the glamorous confines of their
trailer-turned-recording-studio. All in all, it's a hyper-eclectic
record replete with robotic bleeps, quirky breakbeats, and just the
right amount of low-slung funk. In the past, the two have produced
records for Japan's Takako Minekawa, Mexico City's Titan (on Grand
Royal), and have remixed tracks by Beth Orton and the Fantastic
Plastic Machine. At the moment, the two are working on a remix for
Beck. Ross also compiled "The Best of Bruce Haack and Dimension 5"
on Emperor Norton and is currently organizing a Bruce Haack tribute
record to benefit children with autism. Aside from their musical
commitments, the two are also involved in numerous other projects
on the Los Angeles art scene. Ross recently completed "The
Recycler" a fictional film which he wrote and co-starred in to be
released on Propaganda Films. Craig is a painter and a graphic
designer who creates all the artwork for the Dust Brothers' Nickel
Bag/Ideal record label. "Rainbows and Robots" plays like the
soundtrack to some surreal after-hours scene at the Star Wars
cantina - Yoda has gobbled a bag of mushrooms and is dancing in
go-go boots on the bar, Chewbacca is doing windmills and
body-popping across the room, and all the while R2D2 dutifully cuts
up breakbeats on the turntables with robotic precision. It's an
unusual record that recycles pop culture of the last thirty years,
and anyone with a love for the musty pleasures of thrift shopping
and swap meet bargains should enjoy the sounds contained within. As
the first track states, "Welcome to a new kind of listening
experience."
