fresh-faced and pearly-toothed, dominic angas is the moving shadow
pin-up. born in london, he spent five years in germany as a child
due to his father's successful operatic career. musically, he
followed the traditional route from hip-hop to house, through
breakbeat to jungle, a journey inspired in particular by early,
dark reinforced tracks and doc scott's "nhs" e.p. rather than look
backwards, however, dom is drawn to new ideas as the emerge.
hooked up with brian fenner at no u-turn, dom started pestering
brian on the phone and stalking him around his west london home.
they sent their first current affairs ep to moving shadow, but we
rang back the day after no u-turn had picked it up. quicker off the
mark next time, we signed them for future releases, to date
"cutting edge / turbulence" and the phenomenal "drones". dom's
other partner, roland, is his sampler (far be it for us to hint at
an unnatural relationship with a piece of technological hardware).
the signature style is distinctly angry - he releases his pent up
fury, belied by that easy-going charm, through the beats and says
it will take a few more singles yet to use it up! their output so
far: "dynamics / the planets"; "you're something else / interstella
jazz"; "storm / sonic shock"; "resistance / hydrolicks".
consistently unfaithful to roland, a serial collaborator, dom has
recently worked with optical (metalheadz artist and grooverider's
producer) and, as neotech, with ed rush (another metalheadz and no
u-turn chap). the buzz about "valves" centers on the industrial,
crushing metallic breaks. hammered by grooverider, jumping jack
frost, randall and all the major players, it also got heavy airplay
on the radio on in the jungle show. a classic dare-to-be-different
moving shadow monster! dom continues to produce for ed and trace
and was chosen by rob playford to collaborate with him on the
prestigious 100th release, "distorted dreams". He has remixed art
of noise and, in house, deep blue & blame and dead calm.
currently working on this debut artist album, which will feature a
mix of slow tunes, jungle an hip-hop, he hopes the prevailing feel
will of a cinematic soundscape.
