alison goldfrapp has, in recent years, worked with the likes of
tricky, peter gabriel and orbital to name but a few. but with her
astonishing vocal range and enigmatic presence it was only a matter
of time before she struck out on her own to produce a distilled
version of her fairly unique talent with collaborator and
film-score composer will gregory. complimenting each other in a way
that only they know how they released their debut album, 'felt
mountain' to some acclaim and in equal parts a great deal of
confusion.
having toured the album they have taken in some fairly
unconventional venues such as soho's doyen of topless sin the
raymond revue bar, usually used to a semi-nude show of go-go
dancers. tonight however in the more conventional surroundings of
the ulu their cinematic soundscapes and orchestral manoeuvres in
the dark make for a distinctly left-of-centre show, brimming with
star quality and a neat line in vocal dexterity.
their influences are fairly wide ranging but in the first instance
instantly draw comparisons with pj harvey, portishead, john barry
and without doubt david lynch collaborator angelo badlamenti. at
times claustrophobic and unwelcoming they have the capacity to side
step their audience and appear warm and receptive in equal measure.
with little in the way of between song banter they choose instead
to let their music do the talking.
employing three microphones equipped with all manner of vocal
enhancing atmospherics along with live violins, keyboards and
percussion goldfrapp manages to cut a decidedly eerie figure in
front of a backdrop of ever changing smoky concoctions and synapse
splitting visuals. equal parts burlesque circus sideshow and
sublime contemporary visionary, she meanders through a set that is
both engaging and strangely effecting. from sparse yet sweeping
grandiose string led numbers to off kilter breaks and beats she
manages to segue easily through a range of styles cutting and
pasting bits and pieces of each along the way.
no doubt the soundtrack to only the most exclusive clapham dinner
parties, goldfrapp are the antidote to the current stream of aor
influenced female singer songwriters. they are a serving of dark,
thick molasses to dido-esque sickly sweet, saccharine musings on
life death and everything else in between. a far more engaging and
entertaining proposition than the aforementioned eminem
collaborating chanteuse, despite the lack of crowd interaction, the
display of enchanting visuals, breathtaking orchestration and
larynx-splitting vocal gymnastics wins through every time.
