Mass for the Present Day was written, some thirty years ago, by
Pierre Henry and Michel Colombier, intended as a ballet for Maurice
Bejart's company. It was pretty avant-gardey even then, and years
later, bits and pieces of it started cropping up in, among other
things, Meat Beat Manifesto songs. For that matter, chances are that
you've heard "Psyche Rock" a few times in your life, though you
might not realize it. Metamorphose gives some of today's best known
DJs and remix artists a whack at Mass's five pieces, and the results
are quite staggeringly listenable. Folks like William Orbit, Coldcut
and Fatboy slim have taken these utterly, utterly sixties-anthemic
tracks (check out the "Wild Thing" riff on "Psyche Rock", complete
with bells) and, with a spot of cutting and pasting and the addition
of some wicket breakbeats, modernized the music without destroying
the flavor of the original. And, given the cohesive nature of the
original five works, these twelve remixes make for an hour or so of
wonderfully unified sonic delight.
Enjoy!
