this drum and bass, fringe hip-hop, and funk rendering of miles
davis' jazz philosophy places classical jazz into a different
arena than a jazz-purist might be ready for. panthalassa-the
remixes is a bit of an electronic/instrumental dj's perspective of
davis' project and where it might have headed if the musician was
still alive today.
found only on the vinyl version is tokyo based dj krush's rolling,
somewhat psychedelic hip-hop blend of "black satin/on the corner."
with loads of sci-fi sound effects and an old school beat, krush
retains most of the original soundtrack-quality atmosphere,
placing davis' careful trumpet phrasing right in the center of the
piece.
laswell's own 16 minute plus subterranean channel mix of "on the
corner" is a mindblower. keeping much of the original musicians'
instrumentation, laswell gives the piece a slight indian feel via
tablas and a funky bass jam. it's very much a live jam session,
and features davis at his most free-form.
all in all, "panthalassa: the remixes" is very heady and deep
shit-so don't put this on expecting to hum along. but if you're
looking for a mind-expanding sonic adventure that's likely to set
your feet to shuffling, then look no further. this is it.
