andy keep, the sometime producer and invisible third member of
seminal experimental hip hoppers earthling re-emerged as one half
of ming in 1999. having worked for over a year on earthlingÆs
unreleased second album, this new project found the producer
recoiling from his former groupÆs freneticism and consolidating his
previous experiments with beats and voices to wonderful effect.
with the exceptionally talented jo-kate benson on vocals, the duo
began to apply contemporary methodology to traditional song based
structures culminating in their acclaimed æangelsÆ release on
hombre late 1999. forming poignant dreamscapes, coupled with a dark
southwest humour and influences that transcend both drumÆnÆbass and
british two-step, their debut album æredÆ is now upon us, and what
a stand out achievement it is!
neither at once easily categorised but yet strangely familiar,
æredÆ is peppered with sexually coy lyricism and nods to those mor
verse/chorus arrangements of yore. a bright, clean, musical sound
with its progression and ingenuity hidden deep inside, this album
demands repeated listening to reap the full benefit of the fruit
that lies within. check the tongue in cheek slashercisms of æcomeÆ,
the dream sea optimism of æmineÆ, or the buoyancy of æangelsÆ to
get a quick fix of mingÆs translucent appeal, and for those of you
wondering where andyÆs musical head is at, the instrumental tracks
such as ævaseÆ with its hip hop swagger and drunken sub bass or the
sheer craziness of bollywood anthem æballarinaÆ should give you the
clues youÆre after.
non ming time has andy arranging melancholik/virginÆs latest
signing sunna into a live ensemble, while jo-kate has travelled
extensively in search of her soul around the tropic of capricorn,
but does intend to settle if only she finds her house keys and to
engage in ming live dates this year.
