compiled by patrick forge and ross clarke, this is the second
off-centre compilation, the first being released last year on the
palm pictures label.
off-centre happens every 2nd and 4th saturday of the month at 333
old street, london EC1V 9LE with residents ross clarke, patrick
forge, mr scruff and the zen masters.
set up in spring 1997 by dj's ross clarke and patrick forge with
promoter neil boorman (aka the shoreditch twat), off-centre has
become the defining club of east london. with regular guests
mr scruff, harvey, phil asher, paul trouble anderson, the zen
masters and 30 fingers performing over three floors, off-centre
has become one of the most successful left-field events in the uk.
off-centre's success is built on the contrasting musical genres it
promotes: hard and dark drum and bass/hip-hop clashes with
up-tempo, soulful house plus retro soul, jazz and funk - and this
compilation successfully captures that vibe. from corrina joseph's
bugz in the attic produced boogie style version of a womack and
womack song, to the excellent uk hip hop track (again produced by
the bugz) 'mastermind' featuring 18 of london's finest mc's, it's
all good! drum and bass meets latin in london electricity's 'hectic'
while the same form meets jazz on the amalgamation of soundz
'freedom suite'. for the jazz headz, japanese quartet sleepwalker
go live on 'ai no kawa' and get a little pharoah sanders (watch out
for their forthcoming album!), the 70s disco scene that the london
faithful are presently obsessed with gets a look in with the inner
city jam band, local hero phil asher plays brilliantly with tempo
and bass on the twisted jazz breakbeat track 'rainbow' and remixes
patrick forge's wonderful brazilian rhyme troupe da lata on 'binti'.
shuggie otis lays down some psychedelic soul and shirley bassey's
'spinning wheel' gets remixed by one of NY's finest dj spinna, and
finally the underwolves, a london duo long overdue more exposure
(now signed to compost records) give us an exclusive taste of the
other side of their breakbeat soul on 'picture this'.
note: tracks 2,3,9 and 10 are exclusive to this compilation
