the eclectic sound of vienna marks the continuity of high quality
spray compilations after e.g. the kruder & dorfmeister mix cd
conversions. this time around, we take an intriguing look at one of
the most flourishing scenes in the european underground.
next to the current happenings in paris, vienna's artists (a truly
unique cast of characters!) offer a dynamic scope of sound that
will continue to develop well into the next century.
avoiding the usual ways of the pop world like a dangerous disease,
the donau-metropole known as vienna has become the new mecca of
electronic music. the viennese in the know would have a hard time
to find one word for all the different styles of music that go
under this new category, as most of them have as much in common
with each other as prodigy does with squarepusher.
what is referred to as trip hop, drum 'n' bass, headz musik or
whatever, can be found on this compilation. all of it! from vienna
- as you may have guessed from the title - exclusively! even kruder
& dorfmeister might not know all of the artists on this cd, but
this is definitely subject to change! the electronic wizards
themselves contribute 2 tracks to eclectic. the first is richard
dorfmeister's collaboration with robert huber under the name tosca
and the second; the fabulous team's deconstruction of count basic's
"speechless" renamed "speechless drum 'n' bass" here for
truth-in-advertising purposes.
while mum and it's nik! (veterans of the scene, who started way
back when most of this stuff was done in living rooms and bedsits)
celebrate their first appearances ever in the us on the eclectic
sound of vienna, the tracks coming out on their native city's
uptight label have been praised as vienna's finest and best.
werner geier (a/k/a demon flowers), who has been christened "the
viennese john peel" by the new musical express and his congenial
couch-potato alter ego rodney "headhunter" hunter, always make for
enthusiastic faces and reactions. no wonder their names can be
found on 3 eclectic tracks. they are responsible for the remix of
tosca's "fuckdubworksong", as well as for the mighty fine
contributions on "closer to god", the showdown pitting urbs & chaos
vs. headhunter and "how will he touch?" from komenda. komenda...?
yes it's betina komenda fresh from her 10-page photo feature in the
face. "how will he touch?" is the perfect, relaxing ending to the
eclectic sound of vienna.
