Title says it all. Releasing this curiousity for fun and because
some kw members were kinda looking for stuff like this.
Dont bother this release if you're after groovy tunes, this one is
for people out there into old school video games and experimental
sounds. It shows that electronic music and sampling is not
exclusive to the DJ/Producer scene like Aphex Twin and others.
This very experimental and minimal recording is based on samples of
early eighties video games and pinballs. It was originally released
in 1981 and re-issued in CD format in 1988 on belgium label Les
Disques du Crepuscule. It's more of a side project of the artist
than anything else.
Win Mertens belongs to the contemporary music family and has a long
discography of recordings and soundtracks (e.g. The Belly of an
Architect), many being minimal, repetitive and atonal musical
compositions - meaning he builds up a music momentum introducing
inaudible and very small variations on the same musical theme.
allmusic.com:
This Belgian composer is not well known among U.S. audiences,
although he has made several highly regarded appearances at the New
Music America festivals. In Spain, however, where he was the
subject of a major television special, he is a new-music celebrity.
Mertens's style employs mesmerizing minimalist techniques with a
sense of the romantic that appeals to both serious music
aficionados and more mainstream listeners. The keyboardist uses a
certain amount of electronics along with some acoustic instruments
like violin, flute, and saxophone. -- Linda Kohanov
