Over the last few years, the path to success for
British male singer-songwriters has led down one
particular road: the middle of the road.
It seems the UK music scene just can't seem to get
enough of wannabe new David Gray's, or in the case of
latest pretender James Blunt, just plain grey.
Manchester's Aidan Smith is a fine exception to the
rule. The last time City Life featured him on these
pages in 2003, he had just signed to Twisted Nerve and
was being touted as 'the new Badly Drawn Boy'.
Like BDB before him, Aidan had a canny gift for
crafting songs that blended daft humour and tear-
jerking pathos in equal measure. With songs like the
amazing 'Song For Delia' (a love song devoted to
Aidan's favourite TV chef Delia Smith), it was pretty
apparent that Aidan was like no other singer-
songwriter around.
In 2005, Aidan returns with his third mini-LP, (no
longer signed to Twisted Nerve), but his mission to be
the 'anti-David Gray' appears more sharply focused
than ever.
Early As The Trees confirms Aidan's mantle as the UK's
most oddly-hinged and idiosyncratic songwriter - but
who still manages to be more accessible than he has
any right to be.
Built of sketchy, soporific songs like 'Jasper's Jump'
and the delicious 'Eclipse Song', the worldview of
Aidan Smith is the antithesis of acoustic stadium-
filling bombast; these are songs teeming with
beauteous bedroom emotional intimacy.
Sounding like a freakish cross between Elliot Smith,
Frank Sidebottom and Randy Newman, there's a slight,
bumbling charm to Aidan Smith's romantic vision.
But like most bumbling romantics, there's something
oddly seductive about it all. With seven beguiling
tracks clocking in at just under 20 minutes, Aidan
makes a fine example of 'less is more'.
