Any music geek worth his or her record collection has
debated, or at least thought extensively about, the
relationship between inspiration and technicality
(whether in production values or playing ability). What
makes music "good" is an elusive and many-headed beast;
is it catchy tunes? Virtuoso guitar skills? A visionary
at the mixing desk? We've all heard albums that combine
those things but somehow miss the mark. Still, when it
comes down to it, I'll usually put my money on the
catchy tunes... and these are what give 010 its
considerable charm.
Ulysses is one of those groups headed by an Indie-Rock
Luminary: in this case, Robert Schneider, co-founder of
the Elephant 6 label and producer of several Elephant 6
bands' records, former member of the Apples in Stereo,
sole proprietor of Marbles. Ulysses is also a reminder
of why these people get so much respect in the first
place. Anyone can record a four-piece in a garage with
minimal equipment and mostly one-take vocals; not
everyone can make it sound great, in spite (or maybe
because) of its relative sloppiness. 010 is one of those
records that might lose its soul if you tried to polish
it up too much.
Despite their name, there's nothing literary (or
impenetrable) about Ulysses. 010 is an album of splashy,
straightforward pop songs. "Deceptively simple" is one
of the most overused expressions in the reviewer's
lexicon, but it certainly applies here. It's telling
that the record kicks off with a brief bit of
electronically created "atmosphere" rather than the
sunny guitar riff that follows it; Robert Beatty's more
esoteric contributions to the rest of the band's bass
(of both electric and synth varieties), guitar, drums
and vocals might not be missed if they weren't there,
but they add a lot to Ulysses' sound.
In keeping with the alleged four hours it took to demo
010, the first two songs seem like a warm-up. The close
harmonies and deliberate, almost ponderous beats on
"Push You Away" give way to "Television"'s rubbery synth
bass line; catchy tunes indeed, but they're blown away
by "Glacier". This is where 010 truly hits its stride.
The track opens with jet-engine-like sound effects, then
engages in some back-and-forth rhythm play and
skillfully builds up to the payoff, in which Schneider
makes "She don't wanna stick it out / Don't wanna stick
out / She don't wanna check out, she don't wanna check
out" sound like pop gold (this is where that
"deceptively simple" phrase crops up again). "Glacier"
will stay stuck in your head for, oh... about forty
seconds, the time it takes "The Falcon" to reach its
really-fucking-infectious chorus. "Falcon" is the polar
opposite of the previous cut: an upbeat, overdriven,
jangly garage-rocker. It's the kind of song that
inspires bedroom-mirror dancing and hairbrush-singing.
Nothing else on 010 quite approaches this giddiness,
but the ensuing tracks are no decline. By the time the
final notes of "Her Silver Veil" fade out, you're ready
to push "play" again... and at a slender thirty minutes,
010 definitely bears repeating. Ulysses is one of those
bands whose songs turn liabilities -- namely the
creative-but-hardly-sparkling production and Schneider's
"casual" singing style -- into assets. 010 displays
