The foreboding and frankly creepy Richard Gere film, The
Mothman Prophecies, is remarkably enhanced by a two-disc
soundtrack/score that is deep, dark, and emotionally
engrossing.
Disc two features composer Tomandandys' (Natural Born
Killers, JFK) cataclysmic hour-long score, comprised largely
of simple and eerie Wagnerian drones sustained upon long,
severe cello lines and ominous, icy piano notes that clink
in anticipatory disaster. Eighties guitarist Glenn Branca
subtly enhances things with ambient guitar throughout, and
on a track of his own ("Collage").
Disc one is comprised mostly of contributions from King
Black Acid, a collaboration between Daniel John Riddle and
producer Tony Lash that recalls the pastoral tonal poems of
early-seventies Pink Floyd ("Haunted," "Rolling Under") and
the gothic ethereal mood pieces popularized in the eighties
by the British 4AD label.
Most affecting are the mixes with female vocalist Sarah
Mayfield ("Great Spaces," in particular) that take on a
heavenly glow, with pacifying keyboard washes splashing in
gentle waves. Midwestern slo-core heroes Low team up with
Tomandandy for the opening and closing "Half Light," which
transforms Low's usual painstaking precision into an ominous
near-dance track. Best heard with the lights off.
