Release Notes:
Nicky Wire is the second member of Manic Street Preachers to
release a solo album this year, with his first record
expected in October.
Apparently, the Manics bassist headed into a local studio to
lay down some tracks and ended up with an entire album's
worth of material, which will be released as the I Killed
The Zeitgeist album.
Review:
The second 'Preacher to invest in a side-project, Nicky Wire
is hoping to follow the successful footsteps of bandmate
James Dean Bradfield. However, it's a rather darker path.
'I Killed The Zeitgeist' has a rather sinister tone to it,
with an experimental undercurrent racing throughout.
Continuous play is interrupted by several spoken
introductions, each with a progressively mysterious feel.
The album dives around from one genre to another, leaving
the listener at a loss for direction. So much so, that if
this release were to be summed up in one word, unpredictable
would be the one to do it.
'Break My Heart Slowly', the first single from the record
belies its emo-esque title and surrealist introduction to
supply solid indie beats and an easy listening melody, and
sets off Nicky's naive-sounding voice perfectly.
'Withdraw Retreat' is another track worth much closer
inspection. By mixing harsh and invasive lyrics with a
misleadingly safe bassline, a strangely satisfying
juxtaposition is created, and its only downfall is the
extensive repetition in the first half.
Die-hard Manics fans may recognise the semi-political 'The
Shining Path', and the slightly acoustic 'Bobby Untitled'
comes highly recommended, with the gentle strumming allowing
the full, unpolished edge of Nicky Wire's voice to shine.
