Release Notes:
Playasound is celebrating 30 years of passion for
World Music ! 30 years and an opportunity to bring
together 15 of the best titles from the albums that
have been important in the history of Playasound,
founded in 1975 by Alain Normand. We begin with a
piece by the Angolan musician Bonga 'Makongo', the
first artist recorded by Playasound in the 1970s
(LP 'Angola 72'), and end with one by the
extraordinary Kurdish musician, Temo ('Evare' from
the album 'Derew'). In between, there is 'Batucada'
(one of the longest pieces we have ever recorded),
performed by 16 Brazilian musicians in Paris, in a
garage converted into a studio, and a 'Pot Pourri'
by Janine Lebout and Roger Clency that was a very
great hit on the islands of the Indian Ocean -
which reminds us that for 15 years Alain Normand
has been one of the foremost record producers in
that part of the world. Then there is 'Wara' by the
group Illiaque (Johnny Depp used the piece for his
film 'The Braves'), and 'The Dying Rebel' by Tony
Malone, from 'Songs of the Irish Revolution', a
recording that stemmed from an amazing encounter
with the sound engineer Franck McNamara - resulting
in one of Alain Normand's favourite albums! From
Ireland we move to the Orient and belly dancing,
with 'Yaward Sabah' from the album 'Ataif',
recorded in Cairo by Hussein El Masry, accompanied
by some of the very finest Egyptian musicians. More
intimate is the world of the Iranian artist Hassan
Kassa∩, whose album 'Ney' is still the reference on
the Playasound label for Iranian flute music, or
that of the Japanese koto and shakuhachi players
Hideaki Kuribayashi and Kuniyoshi Sugawara (a piece
from the album 'Masters of Zen'). Two women artists
are prominent on the Playasound label: the
Argentine singer HaydΘe Alba, with 'El Choclo' from
'Milongas y al Tango', a tribute to the poet Jorge
Luis Borges, in which she is accompanied by Gustavo
Beytelmann, piano; and a Brazilian singer who has
been working with Alain Normand since 1988, Nazare
Pereira, with her unforgettable interpretation of
'Caroline'. Nazare Pereira's latest album is
devoted to capoeira, a Brazilian dance and also one
of the martial arts. In the 1990s Alain Normand
achieved his dream of producing a series of
recordings devoted to fado, a musical tradition
born in the streets of Lisbon (Portugal is a
country he loves!), which enabled him to meet one
of the greatest interpreters of the genre, Carlos
Do Carmo ('Namorados da Cidade' from the album 'Un
parfum de Fado'). At the end of the 1990s
Playasound crossed the ocean once more to record
five albums by Cuban bands, including El Son Entero
('La cazuela'). Finally, this anniversary album
would not have been complete without Adama Drame,
now regarded as one of the greatest African
percussionists, with whom we have built up a sound
friendship over the years, from album to album.

the various cultures that make our Blue Planet so
