After two years of release-abstinence, Sub Static boss M.I.A. is
finally back with a foretaste to her 2nd album, coming up in
January 2007.
In the meantime, she was not only busy to get settled
in her new hometown Berlin, but also to prepare and perform her live
set, which had been a longstanding challenge to Mia, after having
become an internationally admired DJ within the past 5 years.
Considering the many reactions and feedbacks to these completely new
live pieces, the A-Side track ôSafe Night", and the B2-goodie
ôLeaving Behindö were picked as two of the very special moments of
the current set, being obligatory to be brought to the studio and to
vinyl at last. ôSafe Nightö is one of those epic M.I.A.-masterpieces,
enchanting you right from the word go, and in this sense linking to
the style that made M.I.A. popular, basically since she first
released records - on labels like Traum, Trapez, and of course, Sub
Static. Big emotions, riddled with subtle vocal dabs within a
straightforward drive, while still keeping the vibe down-to-earth and
drawing on moderate means - a unique quality that inheres to her
since day one. The B1-cut ôQuirlieö is rather reflecting M.I.A.Æs
reverse side, taking minimal mindset to a deeper ground like a
primevil soup, and sensibly routing it to a creepy taget state - in
brief, the reflection of a Berlin winter period that feels like it
will never end.
