With his recent book of the same name Simon
Reynolds reminded us that rock music can work on
the floor and with the funk....an all-exciting
prospect that served as an education for those of
us with a blind-spot to the post-punk era. For
many who read it, though, there were just too many
obscure bands and references to fully understand
the evolution of Punk into the realms of pop, and
so this extensive compilation is greeted with open
arms, hand-picked by Reynolds and making for a
perfect bedside partner to the book. Proceedings
kick off with an early track from the Fall (quite
timely since Mark E Smith is back in the
newspapers after sacking his band, again), Devo,
Scritti Politti, The Slits, Robert Wyatt, The B52s
and The Human League among others. ThereÆs not a
dull moment to be found, and anyone who has yet to
dip into this genre beyond clips on Channel 4
            should check this promptly.
