'A picardy third (also known as Tierce de Picardie) is a harmonic device used in
European classical music. It refers to the use of a major chord at the end of a
musical section in a minor key. This is achieved by raising the third of the
expected minor triad to create a major triad. The aural effect of this is
unexpected on the ear, and can add a "bittersweet" feeling to the music,
described by some to sound "ethereal" in quality.'
In the spring of 2003, songwriter Charlie Deets convinced Missy Neis, the girl
whom he had just broken up with and emotionally abused for the past two years,
to learn to play the bass guitar so they could form a band. Charlie had been
addicted to prescription tranquilizers during that time and had little awareness
of his actions, short of producing a staggeringly prolific output of
home-recorded music.
Finally getting off drugs that summer Charlie enlisted longtime childhood
friend, Jeff Shafar, to play drums, something he had never done before either.
Charlie's brilliant sense of song and mood was documented on sally's hurriedly
recorded debut full-length, sally. As schizophrenic and bombastic as Charlie,
the record gives the feeling that the wheels may come off and the train may
explode at any moment.
During the making of sally, the band met local recording engineer Mark Berlin,
whom they hit it off with and asked to join the band. Mark was from Delaware and
had played guitar before. Charlie soon discovered that these two new pals, and
seemingly opposite personalities, were guitar soul-mates.
sally went on to begin recording the attrition e.p. in the summer of 2004, but
soon made the ironical decision (considering the name of the record) to replace
drummer Jeff Shafer. Shafer's protean style served the band well during the
punkish childhood of sally, but the band's new songs required more nuance and
expression.
Hunter Morris was the first drummer the band tried out after placing an ad on
Craig's List. Hunter's fusion-like syncopated style was the perfect compliment
to Charlie, Mark, and Missy's drone and trance textures. The band rerecorded the
attrition e.p., a dark, psychedelic, noise-rock mediation, with Hunter in the
winter of '04/'05.
They played around Chicago constantly during the spring, and toured the east
coast that summer, their live show becoming a potent and provocative freak-out
of pop and psychedelia, effortlessly drifting between structured song,
improvised exploration, and violent antics.
But dramatic circumstance were to strike the band once again. Hunter abruptly
decided to move to London with his girlfriend, once again fulfilling the
prophecy of the attrition e.p.. Luckily, when upon hearing the news, Charlie
rushed to get Hunter into the studio with the band to record the latest batch of
songs.
The resulting picardy third e.p. represents the culmination of Charlie's adept
pop sensibility and the band's groovy noise-stew. It was recorded and mixed
entirely to analog tape over 5 days to preserve the organic feel of the band.
Producing it themselves, sally created a unique temporary autonomous zone of
musical anarchy. Despair, disease, drug-addiction and death permeate the picardy
third e.p., as does a fascination with the innocent and the beautiful. Often
dynamic, sometime surprising, the picardy third e.p. is a poignant statement by
a band constantly on the verge of implosion.
