Originally released in 2005, but hard to find until the recent
repressing. Tagged as 2005 accordingly. For the Spz nuts.
Laid down in a single continuous take, Guitar Loops reveals
another side of Pierce's playing, as he launches into a set of
sliced solos that involve percussive techniques as well as the
more familiar amplified abstractions. Alternatively sounding like
a gamelan orchestra, a carillon and the opening bowel-churning
power chording of a Blue Cheer concert, Guitar Loops ingeniously
entangles the exotic musical minimalism of Charlemagne Palestine
and Philip Corner with the free rock sirening of Expressway To Yr
Skull - era Sonic Youth.

J Spaceman is back?!! Yes! New Spiritualized album!? No!! Solo
guitar loops all itchy and cut up like a bunch of scrap photos but
recorded really really really well?? Yes!! That's the shit
Spaceman!! Rock n' roll son!! Actually this record isn't THAT
amazing, but I do love Spaceman so I'm obviously gonna say it's
great. It's great! It does take a while to attach itself to you,
but once it does it grips like stapled lightning! It is very
electric, almost sounds electronic at times as the editing is
rather frantic, but by and large it's a great experiment into the
possibilities of the simple tools of guitar, amp and drugs.
Although the Wire said it sounded like Charlemagne Palestine!? Not
quite that great, although it is great and I guess it's a good
thing that he teases you with subtle drones instead of just going
the whole hog and saying "here's the key of D for about 2 hours,
put that in your bong etc etc." So much respect to Spaceman for
cracking out this crackling piece of midnight static, best enjoyed
on headphones staring into blank swaying fields with a coupla
birds divebombing across your field of vision now and then.

One continuous take of J. Spaceman on guitar might seem like a
pretty normal idea. Spiritualized have clocked in hours and hours
of live jams, extended bridges, and full-blown noise soundscapes
during their past live performances. This cd is 35 minutes, 1
track, and played with (as listed in the liner notes) a Fender
Jaguar guitar, a shaker, and a Fender Super Champ. Throughout the
entire loop notes and harmonics are plucked on the guitar creating
more of an ecletic rhythm of brittle and metallic sounds. The
overall effect sounds just like it comes across, experimental. No
big distorted waves of guitars or drones are to be found.
After about 1:50 it gets a little more rhythmic with the guitar
plucking sounding like steel drums. The shaker comes across like a
container of tic-tacs with only a few pieces left bouncing around
inside. At about 20 minutes some standard amp-feedback screeches
forth with a bit more aggression and emotion. Guitar craziness
ensues, but nothing that hasn't been performed with more intensity
and vigor in the past. Overall the ideas, if there were any to
begin with, just aren't there. This sounds like it could've been
any kid messing around with the massive display of pedals at
Guitar Center. Kudos to the golden-embossed artwork, that movie
Clash of the Titans rules!
