The skalds (bards) of the Vikings composed some of the most
astonishing and complexe poems of all times and many of these
poems were obviously part of a musical tradition, because they
were often sung to the accompaniment of the lyre. This being
the most prestigious form of entertainment, the culture and
daily life of the Vikings also included other music, performed
on other instruments: well preserved cow horns, wooden lurs,
bone flutes, panpipes and hornpipes have been found in
archeological excavations, but no information on the music
played on these instruments has been left to us.

As Scandinavians dealing full time with medieval music, we got
more and more intrigued by the thought of the music that
carried these poems and sounded on these instruments. Our
fascination brought us on a voyage of discovery into the
earliest written records of traditional music from the areas
populated by the vikings. Thus we found archaic melodies
fitting old Norse metres and several kinds of minimalistic,
suggestive tunes which could often be linked directly to
instruments almost identical with the Viking Age finds.

All of a sudden we found ourselves with a large melodic
treasure which permitted us to clothe the refined poems in
music and to do the expressive instruments full justice in
accordance with the conditions of the era; a musical material
that allowed seeming limitations to be turned into creative
     richness.

The programme "Kvasirs Blood" is the artistic result of our
dreams and the work they have inspired.
