Slated for worldwide release September 12, 2006 the self titled,
full length album from Land Shark a.k.a. Lance DeSardi on Coco
Machete/OM will shake up any preconceived notions held by fans of
all dance, rock, electro and alternative sounds. The Land Shark
project is an edgy departure from Lance's previous projects as an
underground house music mainstay. Still deeply rooted in dance
rhythms, Land Shark takes derailing hard left turns into the sonic
realms of industrial, punk and electro.
The Shark's vocal performances vary greatly in range from aggressive
screams on "Shake Me" to hushed whispers on 'Dangerous' and melodic
chants on "Riot" taking the listener to the depths of an unsound mind
that is Land Shark. From the opening lines of 'Dangerous' , "We'll
here I am again contemplating what I did wrong", to 'Tie Me Up'
dropping a clever a Vanity reference with "You say you like it nasty,
you say you're a nasty girl, well if you're so damn nasty then step
into my world" and 'Fear And Loathing' with ôsomething I ingested is
instilling a fear", a murky picture is painted of a world defined by
sacrifice, prey and ultimately, abandon.
The music itself, drenched in angular synths, gravelly basslines,
hypnotic live and electronic drums, defies genrefication, just like
the label from which it spawned.
Coco Machete Records, launched in the summer of 2002, has spent it's
four short years defying the standards of modern dance music in its
attempt to collapse the walls of genres imposed by media, retail,
clubs and DJs themselves. With 12" dance releases fusing elements of
hip hop, disco, rock, electro, pop and soul, Coco Machete has been
embraced by adventurous DJs worldwide. DJs afflicted with Cojonitos
(small balls) need not even approach the listening booth, Coco
Machete is for those with Big Nuts and Big Knives.
The Coco sound has been defined heavily by seminal releases "Shake
Dat Booty" by The Three Kings which is now being re-released in the
UK on Defected Records with Sonar Kollectiv remixes and Land Shark's
"Tie Me Up" which was licensed to PIAS for Europe and remixed by The
Chicken Lips . 2004 saw the release of Coco 's first compilation ôA
"Night Called Thatch" mixed by Lance DeSardi and label owner Sean
Holland. "Thatch" garnered tremendous press for it's rebellious edge,
blended seamlessly with that New York block party vibe. Reviews and
features appeared in both URB and XLR8R in the US as well as being
the only CD to be awarded ôpick of the monthö in both UK mags DJ and
IDJ.
Land Shark's first album also sees a perfect partnership between New
York City 's Coco Machete and San Francisco 's OM Records. Both
labels being anomalies in the dance world having focused more on
artist development and strong branding rather than a proliferation of
nameless, beat driven, underground club tracks. The most obvious
reason driving this partnership is that Lance himself is an artist on
both labels having released a mix on OM 's series entitled "San
Francisco Sessions." This mix also in 2004 brought Lance to the
forefront once again with most of the press focusing on his dirty
grinding soundscape which was an intentional departure from the
smoothed out sound typical of San Francisco .
Be on the lookout for the full length album on CD, Vinyl and Digital
formats as well as a release of the first single ôShake Meö. The
single will feature remixes from Sweetlight who has previous releases
on Trevor Jackson's Output Recordings and David Duriez's Freak N'
Chic imprint.
Impossible to escape this realm on CD it will also be delivered as a
live performance with a fall tour backing up the release.
