Began in 1998 as a way to get players from such disparate genres as hip hop,
gnawa, drum'n'bass, rock, jazz and whatever, to jam together and kick it with a
tasty groove, has since become a "band" consisting of over 80 players, only 4 to
6 of whom ever get together at one time on the same stage. Lead by
bassist/composer Mike Rivard, Club d'Elf is the musical equivalent of the
Illuminati ( or the Stone Cutters ), with a hierarchy of High Adepts ( including
Moroccan oud player and percussionist Brahim Fribgane, drummer Erik Kerr, and
turntablist Mister Rourke ) and multitudinal rungs of varying levels of
Initiate-hood, each with it's own arcane rites and rituals, secret handshakes
and "taint-recognition excersises". Members represent the finest in the Boston -
New York Improvising / DJ / Rock / Jazz / World Music / Jam scene. Holding a
residency of every other Thursday night at Cambridge's Lizard Lounge for the
past 8 years has provided the band with a unique opportunity to hold regular,
non-denominational revival meetings - or "ceremonies" - where Muslims,
Christians, Jews, Pagans, Buddhists & Those Who Cannot Be Named, come together
and find common ground in the Old Soul Music, each finding their own path to The
Stank, and ultimately: The Trance! Serious booty-shaking has also been known to
occur.
