Apparently this album, the debut from Chatham-based Pete
Molinari, was recorded live in the kitchen of cult artist
Billy Childish (with one track even featuring BillyÆs wife
Julie on vocalsà). This might also explain the albumÆs
hauntingly æoldÆ quality, in fact when I first popped this in
the drive to listen to I wasnÆt sure whether it was
contemporary or not, it has that old time session feel which
is so vacant from todayÆs clean and precise recordings. I
realise the lo-fi production style is often mimicked, but
MolinariÆs album sounds like the real thing û performed live
and recorded badly to give the record a warmth and a
spontaneity rarely captured. Molinari has been playing solo
for five years now, perfecting his style in the cafes and bars
of New YorkÆs anti-folk epicentre East Village, and this is
maybe how he manages to capture such an accomplished
performance. The songs themselves are maybe best compared to
Bob Dylan, Nick Drake or at times even Fred Neil û comparing
it to anything contemporary would frankly not do it enough
justice. æWalking off the MapÆ is a hugely enjoyable record
and should be lapped up by avid folk/rock fans, sit back and
     let Molinari sing to you.
