*Ripper's note: The Booklet Back scan says c. 2005 but this
album was only released in June 2006.
Sierpinski are a Leeds based four piece and unsurprisingly one
of the members used to be in Hood (I'm secretly suspecting
everyone in Leeds is about one degree of separation away from
Hood somehow). Rather than go for the Hood comparisons though,
I'd rather write about the record because it's really quite
good indeed. Taking the glitchy IDM textbook sounds and
layering them beneath some rather spiffing rock music is
hardly unique or fresh, but Sierpinski do it very well --
probably because they have a name which is rather hard to
spell. I mean we all know that IDM and complex spelling are
like peas and carrots, I'm surprised the album title isn't in
binary code on the sleeve actually. Despite this it all works
quite shockingly well, the electronic elements never overpower
the strengths of the band's instrumentation and songwriting
and what we're left with is a record which genuinely distils
the best bits of a good handful of genres. There's a nose of
Mogwai, a faint hint of Morr Music, more than a shake of
Explosions in the Sky and a healthy side serving of Hood
(whoops) so if you've got a vague interest in hearing what it
might sound like you'd better snap this up pronto...
The brand new Sierpinski CD on Jonathon Whiskey of all things.
Yep we've come out of hibernation for one last fling at the
world. Its our first release for 2 years and most likely our
last (unless Sierpinski want us to do anymore and we'll
happily release music by 'em 'til the cows come home.) The
debut album (This Geography of Ours) sold out quickly and was
really well received everywhere as a breath of fresh air.
Three years later they pop in with this sparkly new album
which remarkably is even better than the first! It takes all
the great ideas and that fresh approach they began with &
builds heavily on it . A whole lot in fact. The same
ingredients of double bass, cello, drums, scratchy guitar are
there aplenty with poly-rhythmical beats and electronics. It's
all instrumental and if you're a fan of Sigur Ros, Hood,
Rachels, Mogwai, Michael Nyman and even Aphex Twin then we
think you'll fall in love with this just like we have. The
organic sounds, textures and songwriting is all intact making
a most tasty marvellous musical soup. I can't recommend this
highly enough to be honest.
